Effortless Effort – do yoga and get more done with less work

In yoga effortless effort is a productive focus to have, and it’s all about quality, not quantity. In the yoga style I share our rest periods are used contextually for bodymind contemplation on rejuvenation; and not from inability to do exercise. It’s pacing oneself for greater well-being in the long run, with an immediate result of feeling great, physically and mentally. Correct postural alignment, and physical alignment with the inner world and one’s work, home, social and natural environment is paramount to “getting more done with less work”.

At my music and yoga studio at Muizenberg Beach, at the foot of the mountain I have a daily sense of work flow. That is meant to read as “flow with work” or the “work just flows” – it’s a Zen thing, I guess. It’s not doing nothing, and despite periods of business, the return to equilibrium of alignment to body-mind-spirit balance, even if only in form of a daily yoga class, a creative hour, a quick swim or surf, or a social interaction.

Effortless effort relates to soul purpose, doing what one is meant to love doing, with love. It is an ideal, but can be a partial reality and evolve to more from there. Yoga is a great way to develop such a way of being. We can all get a much improved “result” when we bring in alignment with and support from higher self.

Breakfast this morning was a healthy one. Last night my body asked “please don’t give me coffee for breakfast, I’d like some simple, cleansing energy”. • Know, nourish & grow

To understand Self and Oneself, in the world, is to nourish oneself in self-knowledge, and grow in wisdom. This is what I share in my yoga classes and training, because this is what interests me, and it makes more sense to me than anything else. Early on in my teaching career I had three symbols made…

  • Yoga. Being. Present.

Meditation creates a connection to all that is – a direct connection, within the bodymind. Accessible anytime, anywhere. In meditation we learn to “be”, to become a being of body, mind and heart, of infinite potential and dimension. Yoga and meditation shows us “effortless effort”, a paradox to the thinking intellect. The dualism dissolves when…
